Jesse and Susan resided at Round-About-Creek near present-day Ashland and Parker Communities at the headwaters of the New River. The old Boone trail passed through their place and they sold hay to the wagons of pioneers who were on their way to Kentucky over the Cumberlands.

Jonathan joined the Union Army during the war between the states. He enlisted in Greensboro, TN. on September 24, 1863. He served with Company E, 13th Tennessee Reg. where he was promoted to the rank of corporal on May 24, 1865 just before he was discharged. He married Mary Forrester his adopted sister. He and Mary had 12 children and resided at Round-About-Creek for the rest of their lives. On the 1900 census, they reported have only four children still living.

Mary was adopted by Jesse and Susan Parker. It was said that her parents were killed by indians and left orphaned. She married her adopted older "brother" Jonathan L. Parker.
